Burn fat, gain muscle. Sounds simple enough. It is simple. Whoa, I just said that it’s simple to figure out how to burn fat and gain muscle. That’s because it is. Especially for beginners or people just getting back into working out. Now that I’ve told you it is simple, let me clarify something. It isn’t easy. Why would it be easy? It’s change, and our bodies, minds, and spirits have a tendency to reject change. Change isn’t easy. It’s hard. It’s very uncomfortable. Having the body that you want isn’t a gift to be handed to you. You have to work for it. You have to earn it. You have to respect it.
Now that I’ve emphasized the difficulty of burning fat, and gaining muscle you can combine that with your already not so good predispositions about working out and feel as though, getting the body you want is the most uncomfortable, unachievable, and daunting thing that you could ever aspire to. Which is simply not true. Because in fact, working out can be something that you not only enjoy doing, but you look forward to as well. You may never have the passion of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jack Lalanne, or Jillian Michaels, but you can achieve a sense of accomplishment and even joy from your workouts.
I want you to try something for me. Let’s look at the last two sentences of the first paragraph of this article. It reads, “Having the body that you want isn’t a gift to be handed to you. You have to work for it. You have to earn it. You have to respect it.” Listed there are some requirements for achieving the body shape that you want. When I read that list, I get a mix of feelings. While I do feel a sense of positive responsibility over these qualities, I also get that feeling that I’m being forced.
Let’s look at that list again, but this time replace one of the words. And as you read it, try not to look at it with a sarcastic point of view. Sarcasm can be humorous at times, but here, we are really striving to empower our minds. It reads, “Having the body that you want isn’t a gift to be handed to you. You get to work for it. You get to earn it. You get to respect it.” This is beautiful, if you think about it. We may not be gifted with the body that we want, but we have the opportunity to get it.
Burning fat, and gaining muscle is achievable. It’s a little bit easier for a beginner or someone just getting back into their groove but it is achievable. A lot of times, a person will start training see great results for the first 2 or 3 months and then plateau. The reason why is because their body has adapted to their workout. It doesn’t see any need to change. That’s why we should change our workouts every so often.
Another way is to take a week off. To some of you that may sound absurd or just lazy. Let’s say you’ve been working hard for 3 months, but you’ve hit a plateau. You can’t seem to increase any reps or resistance no matter how hard you try, and your form is deteriorating. Take a week off where you just do light cardio, if anything. After a week, you’ll come back invigorated and ready to tackle your workouts.
My final note on burning fat, and gaining muscle is to emphasize diet. I will go over a few methods to achieving fat loss and muscle gain simultaneously. The better you follow them, the better your results will be. Sometimes you’ll be faced with decisions like, ‘should I eat that piece of cake, or should I stick with my plan?’ Now I’m not saying that you can’t have your cake and eat it too. I’m just saying you can’t have it as often as you may want. With any fitness program, remember that diet is a key element to your results.
If you build muscle easily then there’s a good chance you build fat easily too. Diet plays a huge role in preventing the fat building process. Even if you have a naturally fast metabolism, diet plays a huge role in building that muscle that you want so badly. And not only that but a poor diet will rob you of the precious energy that you want and need to perform not only your workouts but your activities of daily living as well.
