Workout Variety

Let’s face it, workouts can get old. They can get boring, stale and just plain mundane. Even for someone like me that loves to workout, workouts can be boring. Unfortunately, a lot of people think that that is simply the way it has to be. To them workouts are a necessary drudgery that you just have to get over with in order to see results. Also unfortunately, those are usually the same people that don’t stick to a workout routine on a consistent basis. They might stick to it for a week, a month, hey maybe even a year, but sooner or later the drudgery wins out and they stop working out. If you see working out as a chore, chances are you aren’t going to stay on your routine very long. You should find a workout that you like, at least a little bit.

I’ll be honest with you though, there are times when I see working out as a chore. Especially when I’m tired from a full week of work and school. Other aspects of our lives can make us feel drained and we choose not to workout. That’s ironic because the right kind of workout will actually make us feel much better. If we’re mentally and physically exhausted, a recovery workout can do wonders for our body, self esteem and overall mood.

Many times I feel like I am too exhausted or sore to work out. During these times I will usually do an easier workout called a recovery workout which is a great way to improve your overall health and fitness. Those times that I see working out as a chore usually mean that I need to do something new with my workouts. This can mean a variety of things. Maybe I just need to add an exercise or two. Maybe I should change the way I do cardio, or maybe I should just change the entire workout and do something completely different. It all comes down to the importance of workout variety. If you have access to weights, I recommend lifting weights and do bodyweight exercises with additional weight. And running is a great way to improve endurance, but I’ll admit it does get boring. Personally I like to stick with shorter runs and watch T.V. or listen to music while I run. Make things interesting. Jog mildly for 30 minutes one workout, and the next run a mile at a difficult but manageable pace.

You may be wondering why I have this article listed on the Deck of Cards Workouts page. That’s because the Deck of Cards Workout offers a huge list of possibilities for an excellent workout variety. You can use 2 or 4 or even more exercises if you want, and you can make it really intense or perfect for a recovery workout. My favorite part about the Deck of Cards Workout is that there is always an element of randomness built into the system. Depending on how you shuffle, you may end up doing the same exercise 3 times in a row. I don’t particularly like when that happens, but it does make things interesting. Whatever you choose to do, don’t forget the importance of workout variety for your health and fitness. It will keep things interesting, and hopefully you will at least have a little bit of fun.
